Forget MySpace. Local site Welcomes Military.

Forget MySpace, local site welcomes militarymyspacelogoban.jpg

A few weeks ago, the U.S. Department of Defense cut off access to MySpace, YouTube and 11 other popular file-sharing and networking sites within its domain. The reason? To reduce the amount of traffic snarling its own computer network. (YouTube is appealing)

Makes sense BUT what about all those military families who use MySpace or one of the other popular sites to keep in touch with families and friends back home?

Well, here in OC, DigitalPost Interactive in Irvine is working with a few other locals to provide military families their own web sites to replace the loss of MySpace and others.

WebsitesForHeroes.com was launched last year by Michael Sawtell, CEO of DigitalPost, and Terry Gniffke, a former Marine and Vietnam veteran and with Caliber Media Group. website4hermb.jpgThe service essentially provides a secure web site (complete with video/photo gallery, message boards, news...) for military family for one year.

Gateway, the Irvine computer company, just announced it will sponsor 1,000 sites. But anyone can help too. Just head to the site and you can sponsor one for $99 a year.
